The Willgren Family was looking for space in which to move the husband’s graphic design business into their home. They also wanted to increase the living area of the house and provide some additional square footage in their daughter’s bedroom. Our design solution involved adding a two-story addition adjacent to the existing house. Since the couple was already working from their house, we wanted to minimize the disruption that the construction would cause to their daily routines. Steve’s studio could be accessed by way of a separate set of stairs from the driveway, without invading the privacy of the house. With the sunroom on top of the studio, the family would enjoy open ceilings, natural lighting, and views through the tree canopies. Their daughter’s bedroom was enlarged with the addition of a study area.

Site plan shows how the addition is rotated toward prevailing breezes. The lot drops off from front to back. The placement of the addition avoids cutting any existing trees on the heavily-wooded site.

Lower Floor PlanThe floor plans show how the studio could be added with minimal disruption during construction. The studio has separate access from the driveway, while the sunroom above expands the living areas of the house.
