Project:  SIENA SQUARE
Boulder, Colorado
Client:  Thomas F. Zimmerman, Architect
Media: Pen and Ink on Vellum, 24" x 36" format
Date: 1984

Siena Square was an adaptive re-use of a nineteenth-century mercantile building, situated one block from the Boulder Mall at the corner of Broadway and Spruce. The mixed-use project combined retail space on the ground floor with office space above.

Madison R. Graham worked as project architect on the existing building remodel, while a new four-story addition was built to the rear of the historic structure. The second floor facade was raised by a foot and rebuilt to accomodate modern ductwork for the new offices.

Decorative brick corbelling on the existing building (on left, above) was an important decorative motif for Siena Square, as well as its neighbors.

Elevation and wall section drawings tell the story of how the front facade was adapted with columns and an inset to allow more light into the first floor retail spaces, while retaining the historic character of the building.
